Reflections in the Light

Devotional reflections inspired by music, scripture, and moments with God.

What Kind of Love

A reflection on the overwhelming grace that meets us at our worst and calls us loved.

Scripture

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
— Romans 5:8

Reflection

There are moments in life when we see ourselves clearly.

Not the polished version we present to the world, but the honest truth beneath it—the mistakes, the regrets, the parts of our story we wish we could erase.

Sometimes those moments leave us wondering if we’ve wandered too far from grace.

Yet the heart of the Gospel tells a different story.

God does not wait for perfection before He draws near. He does not ask us to clean up every broken piece before offering His love. Instead, He meets us exactly where we are—with mercy that is stronger than shame and grace that runs deeper than our failures.

The love of God is not cautious or measured. It is relentless.

It pursues us even when we are running the other direction. It restores what we believed was beyond repair. It sees the broken places in our lives and begins turning them into something beautiful.

This is the mystery that leaves us standing in awe.

What kind of love would leave heaven for us?

What kind of grace would take the weight of our failures and replace it with righteousness?

The answer is the love of Christ—a love that does not depend on what we deserve, but flows freely from the heart of God.

Spiritual Insight

Grace changes the story we tell about ourselves.

Where shame once said “You are not worthy,” God speaks a different truth:

You are forgiven.
You are restored.
You are loved.

The cross reminds us that God saw every part of our story—every mistake, every hidden struggle—and still chose to give His heart for us.

Nothing in our past is stronger than the mercy of God.

And when we truly begin to understand that, something inside us shifts.

We no longer live trying to earn His love.

We live amazed by it.

Connection to the Song

“What Kind of Love” was written from the place of wonder that comes when we realize how deeply God has loved us.

The song reflects the moment when we stop trying to earn grace and simply stand in awe of it.

It is the realization that even in our worst moments, God did not turn away. Instead, He moved toward us with open arms, offering forgiveness, restoration, and new life.

The question at the center of the song is not meant to be fully answered.

It is meant to be felt.

What kind of love would do this?

Only the love of Christ.

Stillness

Take a quiet moment and reflect on the grace God has shown in your life.

Think about the times when you felt unworthy, uncertain, or distant—and yet God continued to pursue you.

Let this truth settle gently in your heart:

You do not have to earn God’s love.

You are already fully known and fully loved.

Breathe slowly and simply whisper this prayer:

“Lord, help me receive the love You have already given.”

Prayer

God,
Sometimes it is hard for me to believe that Your love reaches even into the broken parts of my life. Thank You for the mercy that meets me where I am and the grace that restores what I could never repair on my own.

Help me live in the freedom of Your forgiveness and the wonder of Your love. Remind me that nothing in my past is stronger than the grace You freely give.

Teach me to walk forward in gratitude, knowing that I am fully known and still deeply loved.

Amen.
